History Of Cookstown United Church

The Cookstown Methodist Church, which is the forerunner of the present United Church, was the result of religious activity started by Irish immigrants who conducted services in their homes.

Around 1824 it became part of the Albion Circuit and built its first buildings in 1825 at the site of what is now the Lewis Cemetery with a parsonage built nearby. In 1858 the church was moved to what is now the Cookstown towers. Twenty years later, in 1878, a brick structure was erected at the present site.

In June 1914 a fire destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt by April 1915 at a cost between ten to thirteen thousand dollars.

In 1925, the Methodist Church became part of the United Church of Canada and we became the Cookstown United Church.

In 2005 the United Church of Canada celebrated its 80th anniversary, and we celebrated our 180th year as a congregation
